Kearney drivers know the inconvenience of having to start your morning fifteen minutes early just to scrape the ice off the window of your car. That has left a lot of folks trying to figure out how to get ice off a car window more quickly, even coming up with some kind of homemade ice melt for car windows. We want you to stay safe on the road, so we’ve put together the guide below on de-icing car windows. And, of course, always feel free to schedule an appointment with one of our service centers for any assistance you may need.
We wish we could share some secret ways of rapidly de-icing car windows. But the truth is that you already know the quickest, most reliable method, and that would be to use an ice scraper. In fact, we strongly recommend you buy an ice scraper if you don’t already have one. No one should go through a Grand Island winter without one.
But, what if you discover your windshield covered in ice, and you don’t have an ice scraper? What should you do, then? Don’t worry, there are other easier ways to get ice off the window of a car, and we share some of those methods below, including how to mix homemade ice melt for car windows.
How to Get Ice Off a Car Window (if you don’t have an ice scraper)
Start the engine and run the defroster with the heat turned as high as it will go. This method of de-icing car windows can take several minutes.
Use a tarp to cover your windshield the night before. This will keep ice from forming directly on the windshield, and you can simply remove the cover in the morning.
Mix a little bit of commercial deicer into your windshield washer fluid or spray a small amount directly on the windshield. Remember, use a very small amount.
Use a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water. Mix 2/3 alcohol with 1/3 water, so as not to damage the paint.
Use vinegar and water as a last resort. Vinegar, contrary to what some Hastings drivers have been led to believe, does not melt ice. But it can loosen it up if you use it in the same proportion listed for alcohol above. But this homemade ice melts for car windows should be used sparingly.
