2013 Malibu!!!!!!

With gas prices once again rising above $3.50 a gallon, you might be tempted to let your tank run extra-low before fueling up. But the longer you wait, the greater the chance youâÂ?Â?ll actually run of gas, and that canâÂ?Â?t be good for your vehicle, right? I mean, could you actually damage your engine by failing to fuel up? Is driving with your fuel gauge near empty, even if you donâÂ?Â?t conk out, harmful to your car? When we joke about running on fumes, what are we really talking about? I explained back in January how running out of gas could conceivably land you a ticket. This week, we look at the mechanical side, as well as other useful fuel tidbits. Pumped out For the lowdown on running empty, I turned to some trustworthy sources: John Paul, American Automobile Association of Southern New Englandâ??s â??Car Doctor,â??â?? and Butch Ferraro and Tony Izzicupo, owners of Salem Street Auto Clinic in Saugus, who have been fixing my familyâ??s cars since I was a kid. Fuel pumps in modern cars, the mechanics explained, sit in the middle of the gas tank, surrounded by cool gasoline. When your tankâ??s empty, the fuel pump burns hotter, inviting wear and tear, and if you consistently drive around with your gas gauge near empty, you run the risk of burning out the pump. â??The first thing I tell my wife is, â??If youâ??ve got a half a tank of gas, fill it up!â?? â??â?? said Ferraro. â??It keeps the fuel pump cool.â??â?? Running out of gas poses little risk to your engine. But over time, dirt and rust particles settle on the floor of your gas tank, like sediments at the bottom of a bottle of wine. Just as you wouldnâ??t want to drink wine sediments, your carâ??s engine doesnâ??t want to drink dirt and rust. If youâ??re down to your last drop of gas, itâ??s going to be contaminated with some of that crud. â??Hopefully the filter will catch it. If it doesnâ??t catch it, it could clog a fuel injector,â??â?? Ferraro said. That wonâ??t necessarily cause a breakdown, but your engine wonâ??t run as well. Dieselâ??s different If you run out of gasoline, you usually just need to add more to the tank. But if you drive a diesel and run out of fuel, youâ??re more than likely going to have to tow your vehicle to a repair shop. â??When diesels run out of fuel, you get â??air-bound,â?? â??â?? Izzicupo said. â??The injector pump gets full of air and you canâ??t get the car started by just putting diesel fuel back in the tank. Now itâ??s a process.â??â?? A laborious process, actually, involving the removal of filters, pressure-blowing the fuel line to clean it out before pouring in new fuel, and repriming the engine. â??Itâ??s the worst,â??â?? Izzicupo said

On one hand, you have the deliciously simple and effective method of strapping a used jet engine to a car or truck, and letting the thrust do the rest. On the other, slightly more complicated side, you can attach a turbine to a shaft drive, translating the thrust to the rear wheels via a differential. Both are viable, albeit expensive, ways of adding jet propulsion to your car. But which is faster? Speed took it upon itself to find out, pitting a thrust-powered Chevrolet S-10 against a shaft-driven Dodge Caravan. The Caravan uses a helicopter engine hooked to its rear wheels in conjunction with its standard gas engine up front. The truck relies solely on good, old-fashioned thrust. Click past the jump to see who's faster over an eighth-mile drag strip.
